During WWI Norman Wilkinson, a British artist and naval officer, created Dazzle Camouflage. German submarines were sinking nearly 8 British submarines a day using torpedoes. Wilkinson proposed that the ships could be painted “not for low visibility, but in such a way as to break up her form and thus confuse a submarine officer as to the course on which she was heading.” The ships were painted in bright colors and crazy patterns.
